This work was informed by the subversive tradition of European Monochrome painting and explores its paradoxical nature.
Stripping painting back to a bare minimum reveals both the materiality and immateriality of painting simultaneously. In its blankness, it slows down the way we look at painting, inviting a direct physical response.
This response allows for a painting to be perceived or sensed rather than understood, in the same way, light or a textured surface is sensed. What interests me is that at the same time the monochrome has the capacity to carry different temporal knowledges, histories, and political intentions.
